In 2022, I designed and crafted the bulky ABC Book using crowdsourced abstract photographs and original designs to create a book which connotes a sense of familial love and belonging.

ABC Book (Evalyn & Leo)

Year: 2022

Medium: 58 page, 5”x5”x5” cube-shaped picture book made from chipboard, printed matte and glossy paper, rice paper, ink, and a latex spine.

Conception: In 2022, I designed this book as an exercise in typographic forms and book-binding. Thematically, I focused the project on the awesome beauty of my family and the great community of friends and loved ones who support me everyday.

Making: For this ABC book, I crowdsourced my images, sending out an open call to my friends and loved ones on social media, asking them to send me photographs of objects that look like letters. I sifted through the responses and compiled the most unique and captivating images, pairing each typographic image with a corresponding word relating to familial love and relationships (ex. A photograph of a horseshoe propped up like a “U” is paired with the word “understanding”). After designing each page and compiling my photographic alphabet, I had the spreads professionally printed and adhered them to sheets of chipboard, making a massive, glossy, ABC board book.

Impact: This project was displayed at the 2022 Thatcher Annual, hosted in the Thatcher Gallery at the University of San Francisco.

Legacy: I dedicated this project to my cousin’s children, Evalyn and Leo. Six total copies were produced, one for myself, two gifted to Evalyn and Leo, and three set aside for my children to be gifted to each of them if and when they have their first child.
